Jackie Robinson's final words send powerful ripples decades later | Sporting News

Next week will mark the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s first game as a Brooklyn Dodger. When he stepped out of the dugout and onto the grass of Ebbet’s Field on April 15 1947, Jackie took on sixty-seven years of segregation in major league baseball. His journey transcended the sports world and it served notice to everyone who insisted on looking in the rear-view mirror to find the greatness of America. He proved that we find the best in ourselves by moving forward.

When asked about his decision to bring Jackie Robinson to Brooklyn, general manager Branch Rickey said that “Some day I’m going to have to stand before God, and if He asks me why I didn’t let that Robinson fellow play ball, I don’t think saying ‘because of the color of his skin’ would be a good enough answer,”.

That quote always gets me.

Volodymyr Zelensky urges UN to condemn Russia, take action on alleged war crimes

President Zelensky says Russia is preparing for a “new bloody wave” of attacks in eastern Ukraine and made an urgent appeal to NATO for more weapons. The idea of any substantive inroads being made as far as peace talks between Russia and Kyiv grow more dismal with each passing day. Local officials have warned civilians that this will be their last chance to leave as Russian forces tighten their grip on the border. More than 5,000 civilians have been killed in he port city of Mariupol, with Mayor Vadym Boichenko calling it the new Auschwitz.

The owners of a sprawling nature resort tucked deep in the pine woods of British Columbia are taking the news out of Ukraine to heart by opening their doors to the country’s refugees. Their goal is to host 100 people on their 81 acre property which was formerly known as the Grouse Nest.

Their new Name? The Ukrainian Safe Haven. Refugees will be provided with all of the essentials as they attempt to piece their lives back together. Inside the darkest of times, perfect strangers are making good on a refrain that never goes out of style.

Home is where you hang your heart.

I would love to tell you my Netflix habits have gotten smarter with time. I really would love to tell you that. Alas, when my evening fare consisted of The Ultimatum: Marry Or Move On, it seems I am a lost cause when it comes to educational nourishment in my streaming diet.

If Tiger Woods Tees Off At The Masters, He'll Be Playing To Win | FiveThirtyEight

It might not be the popular opinion of golf geeks or sports talkies but I’ve had my fill of Tiger Woods.

In present day, he is arguably the greatest golfer of all time but in 2009 there was no argument. Back then he was destined to surpass Jack Nicklaus for the title belt before his star crashed, literally and figuratively. We came to learn he was even more prolific as an adulterous jerk than he on the links. His personal life and his career spiraled from there as a result of his self-destructive arrogance, but you’d never know it from listening to the talking heads gush about his return to Augusta this weekend. They wax poetic on the former king of the sport as if he wasn’t the sole reason for his demise. I’m sorry, but Tiger Woods ain’t giving me a reason to watch the Masters.

In fact, he’s giving me yet one more reason not to.

Eric Church is a new age country singer and I never planned on knowing that much about him. And then he canceled a concert last weekend so he could attend the Final Four and watch his beloved UNC Tar Heels and I felt as if I knew too much about him. He is trying to mend the fences by staging a free concert now but I have to wonder how many people will decide they don’t want to go back to Church. You knew I was going there, right?

NEA statement on Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's Senate Judiciary Committee vote | NEA

The Senate yesterday confirmed the nomination of Ketanji Brown yesterday by a vote of 53-47, making Brown the first black woman to serve on the highest court in the land. This result was as bi-partisan as things get in these times with three Republicans crossing the aisle to ensure the confirmation. It’s a much needed win for Biden as well with the mid-term elections just around the corner.

Father Says Homeless Man Saved Daughter And Her Friends During Sacramento Shooting – CBS Sacramento

Last weekend proved once again that we have no rock bottom.

When it comes to supply chains, there is no disruption when it comes to the carnage humankind is capable of. There is no line we will not cross, no sacred place we will not desecrate. Saddest of all is the realization that people killing people has become a routine part of our everyday.

Tim Langer doesn’t own a television or a computer and he doesn’t get to read the newspaper all that much. You can excuse his ignorance when it comes to our other pandemic seeing as how he is living on the streets. His ‘home’ is a tiny space off K street in downtown Sacramento, where he is invisible to the rest of the world most days. And then an eruption of gunfire roused him from his sleep, thrusting him from the shadows and directly into the line of fire. That’s when he came across a couple of panic stricken young women and he made sure they would live to see morning.

“From what I could see, the state of war, I was just trying to calm them down and keep them reassured that everything was going to be all right.”

When faced with a moment where actions mattered more than words ever could, Langer made his way through the darkness that was busy stealing six more souls. He placed himself in harm’s way, shielding the women with his body as he raced them to cover. And to that never ending pit of hopeless outcomes that was hunting for more lives to take his message was a resounding one.

Not today.

  1. A great post, Pilgrim. Several stories hit me. Branch Rickey’s comment is inspiring for sure. A homeless man saving lives makes me believe there is some good in humans. itis sad that we have to make note of the occasion of having the first black female on the supreme court. Reality is what it is and thankfully we won’t have to make note of that occasion again. Also, any Biden win is coming too late to offset his
incompetence. Speaking of that, Tiger Woods ought to go away. I looked at a news conference with him going on about how difficult it is to walk. I guess he should have thought of that before getting into his car. The situation in Ukraine is getting worse. I just don’t understand how a bully in Moscow can intimidate the free world. His military has proven itself to lack world-class competence. So give Zelenski the tools to push these guys back home. Eric Church is an idiot. He probably believes his PR rep who tells him how great he is. Let’s hear it for the Ukrainian Safe Haven. Enjoyed the post, Marc

    • I love that quote by Branch Rickey. Today’s players would do well to read up on Robinson if they haven’t already.

      Joe is rudderless.

I can’t deal with the Tiger love. The dude was an absolute whore when he was married, and that doesn’t matter in the least to his sycophants. Also, the fact he’s gotten into a couple of serious accidents while hopped up on pills . . . and again, they talk of his adversity as if it’s not his own damn fault. I guess he had to kill someone before that tune changed. Jesus.

I hear you with that sentiment. When a person’s race or sex is no longer a story, well, we won’t be around to see that day but it will be a good day.

The Russian military doesn’t have a very good track record when you look back at their involvements. Their last good showing was in WW2 when we had their backs.

I promise to never speak of Eric Church again.

Here’s to the Safe Haven and to heroes everywhere.

      Salud Boss!

  2. RE: Baseball. Yes. It’s back!! But, more and more, I wonder if that’s a good thing. Universal DH, extra innings starting at second base, the inevitable banning of the shift, and how they are destroying pitching. I’m just not liking all of these changes. Honestly though, given how they did last year, I am excited to see what the Giants will do this year — but the pessimist in me says there is no way they can do that again, not with the rosters they put together with duct tape and old glue.

But that leads me to your comments about Jackie Robinson. He is a hero and those who led the way absolutely should be celebrated. That said, I have heard that, unlike previous years on Jackie Robinson Day in MLB, the patch with his number on it has to be in Dodger Blue for every player, regardless of what team they play on. As a Giants fan, with stone cold. disgust for anything relating to the Dodgers, this is offensive and it should be to the players who have to wear it. I mean, imagine if you’re a Yankees player and you’re ordered to wear something in Red Sox colors to honor some past player or event of the Red Sox … it’s just … eeeerrrrggghhhh.

The Sacramento mass shooting (which is looking more and more like a gun battle between rival gangs) was a block from where I worked for 18 years. The story about Tim, the homeless man, is one of the few pieces of light in this horrible tragedy. We need more people like him.

    • The changes made by the MLB are artificial additives that take away from what made the game unique in the first place. Things like a possible pitch clock being used in the future, when all that would need to be done is have the umps be proactive. The batter stays in the box the entire at bat. The ump warns pitchers before hand to keep the flow moving or else. Done.

Don’t get me started on them banning the shift. It speaks to the complete lack of fundamentals at the major league level. I was taught to hit the ball the other way, to bunt, to move the runner over. Today? Home run swings and whiffs. It’s nonsense.

Oh, I’ll still watch of course. It’s baseball.

Nah, I agree with you. The color should be of the team wearing it to show the unity that exists in the collective. But what do we know?

A homeless man impacted the lives of these people while so many elected representatives ignore it altogether.

      • I don’t know if any of the rules changes, both already in place and coming down the pike, that I’m in favor of. The game is fine the way it is.

The shift issue is … disgusting. The best hitters in baseball have forgotten the first rule of hitting – hit it where they ain’t.

        Liked by 1 person

        • What is maddening is how the MLB seeks to remove the essence of what makes it different from all the other sports.

What Wee Willie Keeler lacked in height he more than made up for in smarts. I miss things like hitting the runner over and bunts and sacrificing yourself to push a run across the plate. Quaint stuff now.

          • Having an argument with a friend last night. My position – analytics is ruining the game. It’s why the shift came about, why hitters take an all or nothing approach, why there are fewer steals, and fewer hit-and-runs. If they really wanted to improve the game, they’d ban analytics.

          • I can’t deal with that crap either.

In game four of the 2009 World Series between the Yankees and the Phils, Johnny Damon stole second, after which he spotted a clear path to third base, which was unmanned because the Phillies were playing a hard shift on the lefty hitting Texiera. He would score the winning run that gave the Yankees a 3-1 lead in the Series. I believe it was the reason the Yankees won that Series.

Baseball used to be a game of chess. Now it feels more like Twister.

  3. I forgot to add my two cents about Tiger. I’m sort of with you. He’s a story I’m tired of and most, if not all, of his problems for 15 years now have been caused by his own arrogance and stupidity. Why should I care?

Well, that’s the thing about sports. They provide some of the most incredible stories of struggle and adversity and overcoming odds and succeeding. As done with him as I am, I can’t turn away from the story.

    • Here’s my thing.

Tiger as a dedicated athlete? No question about it. He’s put in the work to get back to this level, which is NO small thing. And if he didn’t have this history of bad and worse decisions, I’d keep tabs on him this weekend.

Not a golf fan but I turned in when he won the Masters for the first time. It was historic, it was fantastic, it was transcendent. He had that “It” factor in that he could bring casual and even non-fans into the sport. Amazing.

And I was plenty fine with everything about the man until 2009, when all that shit went down. And then watching it all get buried under the narrative of Tiger’s long road back. And then the car accidents, plural, in which he was hopped up on pills. And once again, he was given a pass. I can’t get past it man. I just can’t.

I totally get your attitude with respect to Tiger. I’m no longer a fan of the man (truthfully, I never was). But the story remains of interest.

75 years! And it should definitely be celebrated. I love what Branch Rickey said. Not everyone would have had the balls to do what he did.

The situation in Ukraine is so maddening and disgusting and disturbing and I so wish we (the rest of the world) could find a way to stop Russia without causing WWIII.

I love that the former Grouse Nest is now the Ukrainian Safe Haven. There are beautiful people in this world.

I can’t even comment on your latest binge…

I’m so friggen done with Tiger. He can go hang out with Will Smith and everyone else who thinks it’s okay to be an asshole and still get standing ovations and cheers.

I do not pray at the Church of um. Church… Talk about hubrish.

Bravo to Ketanji Brown! It’s all the more wonderful that three Republicans had to cross the aisle, as you say. And, maybe, just maybe, one day we will be saying so and so was named judge. Not so and so Woman or So and so Black Woman… just so and so. male or female. That is a long time away, though, I fear.

Have you ever noticed that those who have the least give the most? Huge udos to Tim Langer. I am so saddened that killing people in these mass shootings has become a side note, if that much. I am blown away that he came out of his “invisibility” to help those in need. I hope the city sees and does something for him (if that is what he wants, of course).

What a great version of Into the Mystic! You do have a knack for finding these (which is a whole ‘nother thing from the other stuff you find 😉

Imagine Rickey and Robinson and all the shit they went through to make history happen. Rickey wasn’t the most popular executive among his peers in the immediate aftermath of the signing. Robinson, well, I don’t want to hear today’s players whine about their problems. Not when Robinson never enjoyed a home field advantage. Many of his own teammates weren’t good with him being there.

Putin is getting help from the hard right wingers, which is no surprise. I just read where Paris might produce yet another ally for him if Le Pen beats Macron. History will judge all of this harshly but how many lives need to be taken before that?

The safe haven, people opening their doors to strangers. Reminds me of the story you shared with me about Canadians doing so after 9/11.

I’m on Episode 6, and it is fascinating. I mean ugly. I mean both.

Will Smith can start his own production company and hire all the actors who have turned away from him and then all will be okay with their world again.

What gets me about Tiger is that any coverage of a golf event is usually weighted to him, no matter his place in the standings. So basically, if he played for the Canadians, the sports talking fools would devote half their air time to a team that isn’t going to the playoffs. Not fair to those who are.

He calls his fans “The Choir”. Dumb.

A loooong time I fear too.

Tim Langer did more in that moment than most elected representatives ever will. How sad is that?

I love this guy. What a booming voice he has.

      • I could never imagine either of them. And the fact that Robinson’s own teammates were shite, just makes it worse.

I just cannot understand how anyone, right winger or not, can join this monster. Let us hope LePen does not win!

Yeah, it’s a beautiful thing when strangers open their doors.

Episode 6, eh? I just might have to take me a look-see just to be able to better mock you, or wait…. what if I fall under that spell? I’ll have to consider if I am willing to risk it 😉

True. It will be mildly interesting (meaning, whatever I see pass by on the news) to see where this goes.

It is not fair at all. Unwarranted, too. People’s fascination with this type of character is beyond me.

Of course he does. What a “wonderful” imagination. Not.

        Unfortunately.

It is so sad! And he is a beautiful soul.

Thank you for introducing him to me! He is really fabulous!

  5. Not today. One man stood up in the midst of horror and saved lives. Not today. One man came forward from the shadows to prove that the colour of his skin was not as important as the colour of his heart. Not today. Politicians proved that they could do the right thing for the right reason. I think those two words are going to become my new mantra. Not today.

    • Rickey was a Christian. In fact, it was during his acceptance speech upon being elected to the Missouri Hall of Fame that he became ill and lost consciousness. He was preparing to read a passage from the Bible when it happened. He was in a coma for a month before he passed.

I have no blessed idea, Eilene.

People giving what they have, people risking their lives for strangers. It’s out there, this goodness, it’s out there and it might get lost in all the madness but it still counts the most.

  7. What strikes me as significant as we prepare to celebrate the 75th anniversary of #42’s entry into baseball is the entire GOP Senate (sans Mitt) walking out immediately after the announcement that Judge Ketanji Brown’s confirmation made history. It makes me wonder out loud if we’ve really come all that far?

And then there are folks like Tim Langer. Bless that man for his bravery and compassion.

  8. There’s so much here, like a massive sumptuous buffet. You make me want to reread Jimmy Breslin’s little book on Branch Rickey and see that film, 42 with the late Chadwick Boseman who really was pretty great. Robinson having to turn the other cheek must have been excruciating. And Rickey, Eileen is right that he displayed simple God fearing beliefs that what he did was right and just.

Need more time to digest all that you’ve written. Again, so much here. 🙂

    • The buffet effect is what I’m going for, happy to oblige SB.

Boseman was great in the role, as he was in every role he took.

Rickey said that he had chosen Jackie Robinson because he knew the man would have the courage to stand up to the challenges presented to him off the field. The game was Jackie’s safe haven, but every single other thing was a challenge, including his own dugout.

  9. I have read this post and approve.

Why were debating skin color of judges or anyone in 2022 is beyond me. Thanks to Trump and his minions aka dittoheads, minions we’re going backwards not forwards.

It’s easy to trash the sitting president and Biden wasn’t my choice but he’s done a lot more for working average people than his despotic, abusive, looney tunes, corrupt, etc. Ad nauseam predecessor.

Unfortunately we have a very partisan country and Congress so not much gets done as we tilt ever so quickly towards W3 and climate disaster. I didn’t introduce politics to the comments, just saying there are different views.

Two things caused me to lose my love of baseball which I used to listen to on a little green transistor radio under my pillow at home as a kid in Dallas. Buddy Bell hit a 3 run homer that landed in my seat but I was out getting nachos. And summers spent out west with my grandparents the timing didn’t workout so my brother and I couldn’t play summer ball. We were soccer guys anyway. And boy does baseball take a very long time.

Anyway, keep on running it down, S. Or M. Or SM. As Steve Martin said when asked if he’d be into some S&M after his stand up show, “Sure, I love Spaniards and Mexicans!”

    Liked by 1 person

    • I don’t blame Trump for the racial divisiveness though. He’s not concerned with bringing people together when building his legacy is all that matters to him. But the people who vote for him, the people who stand (hide) behind him after all his shit give themselves away. They want the old days back, and they don’t much care about the worse of it as long as they get better.

I’m not a Biden fan, but he’s in a no win situation on a lot of counts. He didn’t bungle the COVID response, that was his predecessor, who was too busy playing politics to be proactive. Biden also didn’t cause the disruptions which led to product delivery slowdowns, which led to the FED getting involved. Unfortunately, it’s his ‘crime scene’ even if the fingerprints belong to the other guy.

Baseball’s response to the steroid explosion in the late ’90’s changed everything. They had lost fans after canceling the season in ’94, so when everyone started hitting homers, it brought attention back to the sport. Bud Selig was more than okay with looking the other way as historical records were shattered by the shit. It also created an artificial market for player salaries. A guy like McGwire who was at the end of his career all of a sudden was resetting the market on salaries because of his power numbers. On and on it went. Owners cried poor mouth while building plush new cribs and overpaying average players.

I don’t get into the kinky stuff at my advancing age. So let’s go with M.

      Muchas gracias hombre
