Still Frank: February 2023

Although this post is a day off, Imma asked me to take a break from Beach Walk Reflections and pitch in with some random thoughts about the ongoing month and the new one. Thanks to Marc for the space.

January was a frightening football event that occurred in my city followed by a remarkable recovery, a disruptive majority in the US House, Brazilians crashing their capitol about an election, a battering ram of storms hitting California, Harry & Meghan, crowning a national college football champion, big tech layoffs, classified documents, Memphis police, Australian Open tennis champions, determining Super Bowl participants, and politicians saying stupid shit.

January deaths included the youngest kid in Eight is Enough, a famed rock guitarist, a 90s supermodel, a Heisman winner, a legendary football official, The King’s daughter, a daredevil who was a son of a daredevil, La Lolla, one of CSNY, the world’s oldest known person, a renowned basketball commentator, a hockey legend, Laverne best friend (Shirley), and people dying from gun violence, natural disasters, and war.

In case you missed it, here are a few January headline gems from The Onion

  • Man who stopped dieting already seeing results
  • Microbes growing in airpods really getting into Radiohead
  • Wistful woman doesn’t want kids but still wants to name people
  • Hospital tells public it can schedule CPR in 6 weeks
  • Parents feel safer letting their kids drink and drive under their own roof
  • Cautious climber cuts off arm to prevent it from getting pinned under fallen boulder

Try the Combo Challenge. By using only the words in the above headlines, create your headline, then share it in your comment. My combo appears later in this post.

As one who regularly checks my WP Spam folder, I wonder about AlanWraky, AnnaWraky, BooWraky, CarlWraky, DenWraky, EvaWraky, EyeWraky, JackWraky, JaneWraky, JasonWraky, JimWraky, JoeWraky, JonWraky, KiaWraky, KimWraky, LisaWraky, MarkWraky, MaryWraky, MiaWraky, NickWraky, PaulWraky, SamWraky, SueWraky, TedWraky, TeoWraky, UgoWrakly, WimWraky, and ZakWraky. For those remembering my mail saga in October, I received this message from USPS this past Monday. The US Postal Service® received the search request you submitted and it’s being processed. Your package has not yet been recovered, but every effort is being made to locate your item(s). We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

  1. January was anything but lazy. With so much going on, it makes me just a tad grateful that February goes short. And this isn’t even to mention pitchers and catchers starts up soon. I can’t wait for baseball now that my football viewing is over for the year. I like the Mets to win it all and the Rangers to surprise. As much as I love the Padres, they seem to be stuck in a perpetual state of promise unfulfilled. Shohei Ohtani moving to the other LA team? Could happen . . as if they need more help!

George Santos is picking the Packers to win it all next week. Many Americans are saying “At least we ain’t Brazil . . . yet,”. And Elon Musk has gone several weeks without saying something stupid.

    I feel like a drink.

PS- Thank you for another home run of a post.

  2. Frank, that USPS saga definitely should be concluded by the end of the decade. The story truly is one for the ages. I won’t be taking part in the Periodic Table because at one time I remember having to memorize some or all of it and let’s just say it wasn’t some of my best work. January is also the first full month most casual basketball fans start paying attention to the NBA, as we well know most start their season with the Christmas Day lineup of games. I’m sure the Association was less than thrilled the NFL decided to dump games on that day as well, and I hope no one is surprised when the NFL starts playing every day of the week, and into March at that. Greed recognizes no boundaries. The Reds’ ownership comments probably reflects the hearts of 25% of the teams’ owners, they just don’t say it out loud. I have chosen to continue following baseball even if many teams are out of contention as of Opening Day.

  3. I can only say I am glad January is over. February is in like a lion for us. Tomorrow is gonna be FRIGID.

And um… to take us INTO January? And why would I want a list of January celebrations – that month is ovah! (I’m teasing you, of course.)

Buddy Guy and Jeff Beck – you rock!

  4. Hi Frank – glad I happened upon this one. That video in your opening is FANTASTIC!! I don’t know, maybe they need to go on America’s Got Talent or something?! Not sure I got the total gist of the post but I suppose we haven’t had a month lately when all the news was good, or even when most of it wasn’t bad. However, hope springs eternal and at least if February stinks we only have to put up with 28 days of it!! Wishing you well my friend.

    • Hi Tina. Thanks for the pleasant surprise. This post is kind of a reprise of a previous blog life. Marc is the host here, and I occasionally post something – sometimes planned, other times spontaneous. This was a planned one recapping January and looking ahead to February through odd celebrations. For me, the odder the better! I’m amazed how there is a list a celebrations for every day, each week, and all month long. I toss in a bit of satire from The Onion and incorporate some music. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

  5. Glad to see Maple Syrup is up!

    What a month!

Love this video. Broken hearted about Jeff Beck passing. Many in my generation seems to have one way tickets….out.

Dieting microbes letting boulder schedule CPR.
    Lol…Gotta love that postal system.
